As most readers will know, 2017 was a tough year for inter-G and therefore mobile activity related to Worked All Britain was sparse… and projections for 2018 are not too favourable either.
That said, I took the opportunity of a meeting in Winchester to test out conditions on 40m, and with my APRS beacons being transmitted as M0YMA-9…
WAB Squares Activated
While conditions were far from ideal, I managed to “qualify” nineteen of the twenty squares I passed through – albeit with just the single contact required for thirteen of the first fourteen of those.
For the two squares around Winchester (SU42 and SU43) no-one was available on-or-around 7.160MHz so I had to find a contact…
By the end of the afternoon, though, a small net had formed around me, with Peter MM3PDM/P at his usual breakwater spot, Eddie MM0EDX/M heading to Aberdeen, Paul MI1AIB fixing his wind-damaged antenna and Dan SM6CNX calling in from Sweden.
GFF References Activated
The route to Winchester took me through the Surrey Hills AONB (GFF-0273) and the South Downs National Park (GFF-0018).
As I headed for home, given that three of those on the small net are WWFF Hunters, I turned off the road to make sure that my activation point for SU76 was within the boundaries of GFF-0347.
For most of the run, my APRS beacons were received and igated onto the APRS2 network… that is, once I’d enabled it, at my first stop in SU84!
Note: beaconing was disabled within Winchester and Basingstoke for client confidentiality reasons!
Of note is the gap in coverage along the A31 Hogs Back between Farnham and Guildford, and limited coverage along the A3 from Guildford down towards Liss – where MB7UG at Alton is obscured by the hills, but MB7USS-1 at Washington is out of range.
The following stations and their WAB squares (plus other references) were worked:
